Rural Schools dominate Table Quiz.
The Annual Table Quiz for Primary Schools was held in Bryansford Social Club on Wed. 20th  February 2008. Many local schools accepted this as an opportunity to reveal their expertise on all aspects of Irish cultural and general knowledge. Each school was represented by a team of four and this year 15 teams competed for the coveted Peter Walsh Trophy and the honour of representing their county at the Ulster Final at Corrs Corner Glengormley on Tues. 11th March at 11.30 a.m.
 The competition involved a ten round table quiz which included questions on history, geography, sport, folklore, politics, music and famous people, all with an Irish connection. As always the children enjoyed their participation in this year’s keenly contested event.
After three rounds the top team positions were as follows:
Joint First
St. Francis’ Aghaderg & St. Patrick’s Legamaddy with 17 pts
Third
St. Colman’s Abbey Newry with 15 pts
Joint Fourth
St. Matthew’s Magheramayo
St. Patrick’s Newry
St. Malachy’s Castlewellan
St. Joseph’s Carryduff all with 14 pts
 
 
By the end of the sixth round the excitement was mounting with St. Francis’ Aghaderg and St. Patrick’s Legamaddy still joint leaders with Abbey Newry and Magheramayo in joint 3rd place and St. Joesph’s Carryduff a mere further point behind.

After nine rounds, an intriguing situation had developed with the following schools vying for the top position:
1St St. Francis’ Aghaderg with 43 pts
2nd St. Patrick’s Legamaddy with 42 pts
3rd St. Colman’s Abbey with 40 pts
4th St. Matthew’s Magheramayo with 39 pts
 
Going into the final round, there was a buzz of excitement in the hall as several teams still had the ability to overcome St. Francis’ or indeed improve their overall position and perhaps gain one of the four places in the Ulster Finals.
After the final round, the team positions were:
Joint First
St. Francis’ Aghaderg & St. Patrick’s Legamaddy with 48 pts
Third
St. Colman’s Abbey Newry with 45 pts
Joint Fourth
Moneydarragh & St. Matthew’s Magheramayo with 43 pts
 
So an extra round was required to establish this year’s county champions and also to identify the fourth team to represent county Down in the Ulster final. This produced the following result:

St. Francis’ Aghaderg with 52 pts
Third
St. Colman’s Abbey Newry with 49 pts
Fourth
St. Matthew’s Magheramayo with 48 pts
 
After the competition, Mr Collie Bell congratulated all the schools who participated and congratulated on becoming Table Quiz Champions of Down. He commiserated with Aghaderg who, for the second year in a row, were joint top at the end of the competition only to be beaten by a single point. He thanked Mr Paddy Hardy for composing the quiz and he also thanked Bryansford GAC for the use of their excellent facilities. The top four teams were invited to represent Down in forthcoming Ulster final in Glengormley  on 11th March. Mr Collie Bell Cathaoirleach Cumman na mBunscol an Dúin presented the Peter Walsh Trophy to the winning team, St. Patrick’s Legamaddy, and complimented all the children on their level of interest in and knowledge of their Irish culture.
